It's unfortunate, but a majority of credit card applications are turned down simply because they have not been filled out with the key answers that credit card issuers are looking for. Most banks and credit card issuers follow a credit scoring system, in addition to general guidelines which enable them to determine whether someone qualifies for a card or not. If this predetermined score is equal to, or exceeded, then the credit card is granted. Again, it is vitally important that you obtain a credit report before applying for credit so that can remove inaccuracies and resolve negative marks. Here are some guidelines you should follow in order to get approved:

  • Fill your application out neatly by either printing it or typing it.

  • Before you fill your application, make sure you have a checking account and savings account. This will give you additional points.

  • Please note that too many dependents may lower your chances.

  • Regarding your total earnings, you should include any yearly bonuses or your spouse's income as well. The higher you make it, the better it will look!

  • Write down an impressive title for whatever your job description is.

  • Avoid looking like a job hopper, even if you are one!

  • If you're self-employed, don't enter self-employed. Enter the name of the company and yourself as being the president or an executive, which is an employee.

  • Under "Credit References", be careful not to list all the credit references unless you are specifically asked to do so. List the ones that you know you have had a good credit history with.

  • Be sure to include your home telephone number. It's also advisable to have an answering machine or a voice mail box, in case the credit card issuing bank attempts to contact you. You should also list an address that has a street address in it as your residence address. If you do use a post office box for receiving your mail, simply list this as an address for billing purposes.

  • Creditors are always looking for a consistent employment history, preferably in the same industry or job type. If you change often from one industry to another, you should explain why on the credit application.

IMPORTANT! It's worth mentioning again that your application should be printed or typed clearly. Try to answer each question and be sure to sign your application where indicated. Many applications are rejected because they could not be read.
